The Evolution of Airport Strategic Management: A Study of Airport Strategic Management in 1947-2022 Using Content Analysis Approach
Abstract
This study analyzes the evolution of airport strategic development research by addressing two key objectives: examining changes in the focus and content of airport strategic management studies over time, and identifying influential studies that have shaped the field. A total of 375 publications related to airport strategic management were reviewed, utilizing a combination of quantitative bibliometric techniques and qualitative analysis to capture trends and significant contributions. Articles were sourced from Google Scholar and Crossref, and keyword classifications were developed based on citation patterns. This approach highlights the historical trajectory and emerging directions in airport strategic planning, revealing trends in areas such as airport economics, terminal design, sector deregulation, model development, adaptive strategic planning, integration with regional development, aviation industry dynamics, and COVID-19-related adjustments. Content analysis provided further insight into these focal areas. Notably, Wijnen (2008) was identified as a prolific author in the field, while Kwakkel et al. (2010) produced the most cited work, titled “Adaptive Airport Strategic Planning”. The findings offer valuable insights into the field’s development and potential future research directions.
